Competences corresponding to the participation in the courses - Mathematics 1 and Statistics, Biochemistry and General and organic chemistry – are recommended.


The course provides a basic introduction to quantitative chemical analysis and the statistical treatment of analysis results. The course will also provide the student with practical experience within the application of statistics in connection with the reporting of own data from laboratory trials. The course will moreover provide the student with a basic understanding of the planning of statistical trials and process optimization from data. 


Quantitative chemical analysis:

  • Potentiometric analysis
  • Spectrophotometry (UV-VIS, IR, NIR and fluorescence)
  • Atomic absorption and emission
  • Chromatographic principles
  • Gas chromatography (GC)
  • High-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC)
  • Mass spectrometry (MS)

Trial planning and statistics:

  • Application of standards
  • Method validation
  • Uncertainty calculation of the measurement result
  • Trial planning
  • Statistical control
  • Sample preparation

The purpose of the laboratory element (corresponding to 4 ECTS) is to illustrate, explain and entrench the theoretical principles through practical exercises comprising e.g. spectrophotometry and chromatography.

Learning targets

On completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:


  • Explain the quantitative methods of analysis contained within the course
  • Explain the selection of quality-assurance methods


  • Apply standards
  • Assess interferences
  • Determine detection limits
  • Select a suitable analytical method from a given chemical structure 
  • Optimize an analytical method with respect to sensitivity


  • Perform independant work in an analytical chemistry laboratory 
  • Perform suitable trial preparation prior to an analytical determination
  • Plan and assess a trial series
  • Independently, plan and perform a chemical analysis through a selected method
  • Report and discuss own measurement results including uncertainty calculations

Teaching method

Seminars, problem solution and laboratory exercises.

Qualifications for examination participation

  • Participation in laboratory exercises together with the acceptance of mandatory papers in connection with these.

All shall be executed and submitted pursuant to guidelines set out by the course manager.

Examination and aids

Individual oral examination based on laboratory exercises, a theoretical topic, and selection of a suitable analytical method from an unknown chemical structure. Duration of examination: 30 min. No preparation time.

Permitted aids: Reports on laboratory exercises. No access to the internet
